Article: If you are really looking for a sleeping bag that will really serve you well, there is a number of factors you have will have to pay close attention to. Approaching the task of shopping for a sleeping bag with the attitude that all sleeping bags are really the same is not likely to leave you with a product that will serve you very well.
Different sleeping bags, as you will discover if you make an effort to collect information before going shopping for one, are designed for different purposes. Should you therefore make the blunder of opting for a sleeping bag that is not ideal for the purpose you have in mind, it would be unreasonable for you to go about complaining about 'modern sleeping bags' because in all fairness, it is your specific choice of a sleeping bag - rather than modern sleeping bags in general - that would be to blame for the discomfort you have to go through.
One of the things you simply cannot afford to turn a blind eye to when shopping for a sleeping bag is the temperature conditions for which it was built. In the interests of the users of their products - and keeping in mind the fact that temperature conditions vary greatly from place to place - makers of sleeping bags design their products for different temperature conditions, so that we end up with a sleeping bag that would be ideal for use in a very warm summer camp, but whose use in a very cold winter camp would be extremely uncomfortable, if not downright punitive.
For reasons like those, it important that whenever you go out shopping for a sleeping bag, and you happen to take a liking to a particular sleeping bag, to read the 'literature' that the sleeping bag in question comes with carefully. You should even, whenever possible, make enquiries with the person selling the bags, to establish what types of conditions the sleeping bag is meant for, and then work out whether they are closer to the real life conditions you are considering using the sleeping bag in.
The mode you will be carrying the sleeping bag to your camping site is another important factor you have to keep in mind when shopping for one. As you will discover, some bags are designed in a way that makes them extremely easy to carry on a back-pack (say the type of sleeping bags called 'mummy bags') whereas others can be extremely difficult - if not impossible - to carry in the same way. Opting for the wrong bag can be extremely inconveniencing.
You will also have to think very deeply about the shape of the sleeping bag you opt for. Sleeping bag shapes, as you are bound to learn sooner or later during your shopping expedition, have greater implications beyond aesthetics, since they determine the sleeping bag's heat conservation capacities. For this reason, if you are considering going camping in a summer campsite (where heat conservation might not be a very major factor) going for a rectangular sleeping bag - which offers a lot of sleeping space but is poor at heat conservation might be the ideal situation for you, of course granted there is car transportation right up to the campsite, as the rectangular sleeping bag is rather bulky to carry on the back. In a similar manner, if you are going camping at a site characterized by low temperatures (where heat conservation is a necessity), then you are better off going making a 'mummy bag' your choice of a sleeping bag, because although such a 'mummy bag' does not offer as much sleeping space as the rectangular sleeping bag, it does offer remarkable heat conservation features.
